The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has enhanced its process to apply for voter registration for eligible citizens who go to DMV for driver’s license, learner’s permit or non-driver identification card services.  There are several easy ways to apply for voter registration or update your voter registration through DMV:

Online
DMV provides a link on its website to enable you to register to vote online through the Office of the Secretary of State. Register to vote online here

In Person/By Mail
Each time you go to DMV for a driver’s license, learner’s permit or non-driver identification card service (new, renewal or duplicate) you will be offered the opportunity to apply for voter registration or update your voter registration information.  You will be provided with a receipt and if you have chosen to apply for voter registration DMV will transmit your voter registration application to election officials.  You will receive confirmation of your registration in approximately three (3) weeks from your local registrar of voters.

You may also apply for voter registration or update your voter registration information through the mail at any time using the voter registration form found here:  Secretary of the State Election Forms.  You may complete and sign this form and submit it to your local registrar of voters.

You may also apply for a new voter registration or update your voter registration information when you complete a Change of Address Form to change your address with DMV (see “Changing Your Address”).

Changing Your Address
DMV has also updated its change of address form.  The new form gives an operator who is changing his or her address with DMV the opportunity to apply to register to vote for the first time or change voter status (e.g. party affiliation).  If you are already a registered voter, the change of address form serves to transmit your voter registration information to your new town (or to update your new address in the same town) unless you indicate on the form that the change of address is NOT for voter registration purposes (opt out).

Change of address forms should be mailed to:

DMV Change of Address Unit
60 State Street
Wethersfield, CT 06161

Important! Keep your voter record up to date
You are not a voter until your application is approved by the Registrar of Voters.  You should receive a confirmation within 3 weeks. If you do not, contact the Registrar in your town hall.
